Abstract

Adonis vernalis L. (Ranunculaceae) is a rare medicinal plant included in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan and officially used in cardiology due to its content of cardenolide-type cardiac glycosides. Despite its long history of use, the chemical profile of the low-molecular-weight fraction of secondary metabolites of Kazakhstani populations of A. vernalis remains poorly studied. In the present work, the components of an 80% methanolic extract of the aerial part of A. vernalis collected in the Kyzylzhar district of the North Kazakhstan region were identified by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 15 biologically active compounds were identified, belonging to the classes of flavonoids, phenols, sugar alcohols, terpenoids, methyl esters of fatty acids, and nitrogen-containing aromatic derivatives. The dominant compounds of the extract were the benzopyran (flavonoid) derivative 2H-1-benzopyran-3,4-diol, 2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-3,4-dihydro-6-methyl- (31.62%), the sugar alcohol ribitol (16.72%), and 2,5-methylene-d-rhamnitol (11.12%). Additionally, methyl esters of palmitic, linoleic, and α-linolenic acids were detected, along with a group of phenanthrene terpenoid derivatives. The obtained data expand the knowledge of the chemical diversity of secondary metabolites of A. vernalis growing under continental conditions of northern Kazakhstan and can be used in the development of chemotaxonomic criteria and standardization of raw materials of this rare medicinal species.
